Plot Summary:The merry chap is walking nonchalantly, all smiles, down the broad road, carrying his variegated flag on his shoulder. A dark wall of sullen, grim people with cudgels on their shoulders marches against him. Still, the merry chap proceeds further, elbowing his way through the thick masses of people. He copes with an avalanche, keeps his balance in a typhoon, canoes up a mountain stream and waves a firebrand against a pack of wolves. In the struggle his flag gets torn strip by strip. The character's labor has not been lost: he has squeezed himself through the crowd, but now he has in his hands a bare flagpole. He heavily turns around and joins the mass of the people with cudgels.
